Special Issue Information

Sustainable social development requires innovative approaches that integrate engineering, technology, environmental stewardship, and inclusive socio-economic progress. Agricultural engineering is increasingly recognized as a key enabler of sustainable development by enhancing food security, strengthening rural livelihoods, improving resource efficiency, and supporting climate resilience. However, technological innovation should not be viewed as an end in itself, but rather as a strategic means of addressing societal challenges and advancing sustainable development goals.

This Special Issue aims to explore how engineering innovations contribute to sustainable social development through smart agriculture, resilient food systems, and rural transformation. It welcomes interdisciplinary research that demonstrates the societal value of engineering solutions, including their impacts on food security, rural development, natural resource governance, environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and community resilience. Contributions are encouraged to bridge technological advances with policy, management, and stakeholder engagement, highlighting practical pathways for improving agricultural productivity while promoting equitable and sustainable development.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, smart agricultural systems, precision agriculture, artificial intelligence and digital technologies for sustainable farming, water- and energy-efficient agricultural practices, climate-smart agriculture, circular bioeconomy, sustainable food production and supply chains, agricultural mechanization for rural development, environmental monitoring, resource conservation, rural innovation ecosystems, and evidence-based policies that foster sustainable social development. Studies integrating engineering innovation with socio-economic, environmental, and governance perspectives are particularly encouraged.

By bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, this Special Issue seeks to provide scientific evidence and practical insights into how engineering innovations can accelerate sustainable social development, strengthen food systems, empower rural communities, and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
