Special Issue Information
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation are fundamentally reshaping how work is organized, managed, and experienced — transforming hiring, performance management, task design, and the nature of employment itself across organizations, industries, and informal economies. While AI offers considerable potential to raise productivity, create new occupations, and support more adaptive and resilient organizations, its rapid adoption also raises pressing questions about job displacement, algorithmic control over workers, platform and gig-economy precarity, employment inequality, and the erosion of worker voice and wellbeing. These labor-market and organizational dimensions of AI-driven transformation remain comparatively underexplored relative to its environmental and financial applications, even though the future of decent work is central to inclusive and socially sustainable development.
This Special Issue seeks to bring together interdisciplinary research examining how Artificial Intelligence and automation are transforming work, employment, and organizations in ways that are inclusive, resilient, and socially responsible. It particularly encourages research that goes beyond a narrow technology-adoption perspective to examine the organizational, occupational, and institutional consequences of AI for workers and labor markets. The Special Issue welcomes conceptual, empirical, methodological, comparative, case-based, and review studies examining AI-enabled work transformation across organizational, sectoral, and societal contexts. Potential areas include algorithmic management, the future of work, workforce reskilling, employment inequality, worker wellbeing, human resource management, and labor-market policy in the AI era. Particular emphasis will be placed on research addressing the question:
RQ- How can AI-enabled transformation of work be designed and governed to protect worker wellbeing, expand inclusive employment opportunities, and build resilient, responsible labor markets and organizations?
The Special Issue aims to provide a multidisciplinary platform connecting researchers across human resource management, organizational behavior, labor economics, information systems, sociology of work, public policy, and development studies. The expected contributions will help scholars, policymakers, organizations, and practitioners understand both the opportunities and unintended consequences of AI-driven work transformation, and develop pathways towards human-centered, inclusive, and decent work in the AI era.
