Rapid urbanization and rural migration, particularly in the last 20 years, have revealed several urban problems, including unemployment, housing, and transportation issues in Türkiye. Meanwhile, developments in transportation, communication, health services, and mechanization in agriculture have increased the attractiveness of clean and healthy rural areas. The main objective of this research was to determine the factors affecting the intentions of people whose families migrated to urban areas over the last 30 years to return to the countryside. Data collection method included questionnaires completed by citizens residing in three central districts of the Samsun Province, Türkiye. Results showed that Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior (with two additional constructs) can explain the factors influencing individuals’ intentions to migrate from urban areas to rural areas. ‘Attitudes’, ‘subjective norms’, ‘perceived behavioral control’, better rural services, and agricultural characteristics were the constructs that had a major impact on people’s intentions. Policy-makers and other stakeholders should consider these factors to manage reverse migration effectively.
